The United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT)
represents the United States in international women’s soccer. They are the most
successful team in international women’s soccer history. The USWNT is currently
trying to win a consecutive World Cup title for the first time this year which
has only been done by one other team, Germany (2003, 2007). The U.S. has placed
in the top three since the tournament’s inception in 1991, having won in 1991,
1999, and 2015 (the most a team has won it).
Many fans that watch the team today are not aware of the
greats that came before our current team roster. The three stars on the team’s
jersey remind the world of the great players that paved the way for the talent
we get to see in this year’s tournament. We have exceptional players like Alex
Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Carli Lloyd, but before them we had Michelle Ackers,
Brandi Chastain, Mia Hamm, Briana Scurry, etc. It’s important to learn history
so we can fully appreciate the progress of today.
